Statement of Work

In this age of fads, mass production, and questionable quality, I try to reflect pride of artisanship in every turned object I produce. Each piece of wood used has been carefully selected for its timeless beauty, keeping in mind the three fundamentals of a well-made creation: FORM, FINISH and FUNCTION.

Ben McLellan

Woodturner Ben McLellan from Nova Scotia,Canada employes his woodturning skills to create artful expressions in wood. Inklings in Wood shop and studio are located on the picturesque Glooscap Trail, in the village of Maitland, Hants County, Nova Scotia's first Heritage Conservation District .

Ben2Ben's unique turned pieces range from utilitarian salad bowls to artistic cremation urns and vases. A variety of wood is used, such as maple, birch, ash, beech, oak, elm and locust. Also fruitwoods such as cherry, plum, apple and pear. All woods are found in Nova Scotia.

vase4 There are no toxic chemicals, stains, or paints used on any of the products. First sanding through 13 different grits of paper to a finish of 2000 grit. Two coats of tung oil are then applied to each piece. A hand-rubbed finish and the signature of the artist completes the process. Many people have an appreciation for the natural beauty of wood, perhaps, in part, because of its tactile and visual qualities. Visitors are always welcome to view the studio at their leisure. There is a great difference between the terms, wood working, wood carving and wood turning. Drop by and Ben will be happy to explain the difference.
